Science: Actually Discovering New Things Or Just Stating The Obvious In New Ways?

I am a big supporter of Scientists. With their medical breakthroughs and their tireless efforts to find new sources of energy and improve our lives, I’ve always been proud of Scientists and wondered why they’re paid only a fraction of the salaries of sportspeople. New discoveries and hypotheses intrigue me; because I’m a guy who likes to learn stuff. I even chose Science for my practice run through university, where I learned that it is incredibly hard if you haven’t prepared throughout high school. Sometimes, however, I read articles that boggle my mind – but not because they’re super complicated and require Einsteinian intellect to comprehend.

Hey, Aren’t You…

Tonight I’m taking the easy way out. I’ve been in “The Lab” (read my garage) for most of the weekend working on my costume and am settling down for the night after an eventful evening run that involved an incident of drunken violence (I wasn’t the drunk one, just to be clear…). I went ice skating on Friday night and was going to write about that until I realised that my creative juices aren’t flowing at the moment due to the fatigue that is now bearing its weight on me as I’ve stopped moving.

So instead I’m going to add to the interesting string of posts started (to my knowledge anyway) by the amazing Canadian Leanne Shirtliffe who extrapolated an idea of Clay Morgan’s about celebrity look-alikes. In turn, Leanne’s idea was amended to more accurately reflect one Reneé A. Schuls-Jacobson‘s visage (because really, it’s a great bit of fun but as much as we all respect and admire Leanne, it would seem a bit odd to be using pictures of her, wouldn’t it?) and now I’ve done something similar. Except with pictures of myself, not Reneé…

#mysuperpowerwouldbe

In a move that will possibly provide me with a lifetime position amongst the geeks (thanks TamaraOutLoud), today’s post is a response to some recent activity I’ve noticed on Twitter. As you can see by the blog title,  my attention has been grabbed by the question of super powers and as every true geek knows – it’s SRS BSNS ಠ_ಠ.

Suddenly, The Light Comes On

This weekend I was faced with an uncomfortable situation. I was nervous and uneasy about it given that I had little prior experience with handling what occurred but I knew that I had to just step up and do what needed to be done. Previously I had left it up to others to sort out but this time, I was the only one who was in any position to do anything about what happened right in front of me.

To give some background – I was out on Saturday and on the hunt for a few things I needed to make my new barbecue area complete. Having constructed the barbecue the weekend prior I was now looking for a gas bottle, a cover to protect the barbecue from the elements and a few other things I needed to create a nice outdoor dining area. I was driving along, minding my own business and almost at my local BCF (that’s Boating, Camping & Fishing) store when it happened. Read more of this post

188 Days Later

My six month blog-iversary has just passed while I’ve been occupied with other things. I took a break because I’m the kind of guy who needs to take a big step back from everything once in a while to examine how it’s all going.

Suffice to say everything’s going well. Being an Adventurer is hard work I’ve discovered and sometimes it’s not always easy to write about something – or nothing, depending on the situation.

Hello. My Name Is Inigo Montoya. (It’s Not Really.)

In the spirit of my own belief that every day is an opportunity to make resolutions, I’m not going to harp on about last year and this year and all the things I did and want to do. Instead, I’m just going to live my life and see where this white water raft takes me. It’s so much more fun now that I’m sharing the raft! Got your life-vest and helmet fastened securely, GE? Tres bien!

I’ve been slack over the past week and the next few days are going to pass sans-blogs as well. I sincerely apologise to my dedicated readers – I’m off camping you see; adventuring on dingo-infested (well, not infested but they’ll be there) Fraser Island and there’s not going to be any internet connectivity while I’m away.

But I will continue to post and 2011 is going to be a great year all round. I hope you all have a great year and that 2011 leads a string of years that fill the rest of your lives with fun, laughter, love and adventure.

Things I Might Have Posted

It's still working - just at half strength.

You may or may not have noticed that I’ve had a VERY slack week as far as blogging goes. There are reasons for this – it’s Christmas Week. I’ve been running around organising things for my trip home, buying Christmas presents and cards and all the other rushy-rush-rush type things that accompany the holiday.

I’d Never Make It As A Navman.

If you’re ever in a hurry to get somewhere – do NOT ask me for directions. In the improbable event that I’m reborn as a piece of technology, Navman will not want to have a bar of me. I try to be helpful, but often find that my internal monologue forces me to complicate my direction-giving by being overly-informative. To everyone’s detriment.

Yesterday while I was waiting for my brother after work, I was approach by a woman who was in a very mild state of puzzlement. Some would say she looked lost. She was seeking the Adoptions Registry Office, which was very close to where I was standing. Unfortunately, her decision to approach me for directions wasn’t the best one she’s ever made. Things went down a little like this:

Homage To H – Holla!

This post is the result of a few things. Primarily my quirky brain, but also spawned from a seed planted in another (unpublished) post and only mildly coincidentally connected to the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows this week. My mind makes some very curious connections indeed.

This is just me being a little oddly creative. It’s a strange post I’ll admit, but you know the kind of blogger I am. If a bit of wordplay based on a single letter of the alphabet isn’t your thing, feel free to browse my archives instead. I know it’s not for everyone. Happy Friday!

Hallelujah for H!

Hark now! Hear this humble human’s half-baked and heedlessly histrionic homage to the honorable letter ‘H’!

The Lord Of The Rings – A Dreamer’s Dream Destroyed

Even the Fellowship couldn't save me from this fate worse than death.

In 2001, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released. In 2002, I was living in Japan, teaching English. What follows here is the harrowing tale of how a movie that I quite thoroughly enjoyed now has me teetering on the brink of insanity and engaged in a viscious battle for enjoyment every time I watch it. Read on – at your own peril. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.
